Mobile Handset DesignLine

To address the growing adoption of Linux platforms by the global mobile market, the Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum announced that activities and membership are folding into the LiMo Foundation as of July 2008.

The goal, according to the group, is to accelerate the common mobile Linux specifications and implementations, bolster the emerging mobile Linux developer community, and support the creation of a range of new applications, services and end-user experiences.

The move affects such LiPS Forum members as chipset suppliers, Linux OS and mobile stack vendors, handset designers and OEMs and regional and global wireless operators. LiPS members who have joined LiMo Foundation include: ACCESS, ARM Limited, Azingo, France Telecom / Orange, Huawei Technology, MontaVista Software, Inc., NXP Semiconductors, Open-Plug, Purple Labs and Texas Instruments.

Founded in November, 2005 to accelerate the adoption of Linux in Fixed, mobile and converged devices, The Linux Phone Standards Forum is a consortium of industry players formed to standardize the Linux-based services and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that most directly influence the development, deployment and interoperability of applications and user-level services.

LiMo Foundation is a dedicated consortium of mobile industry leaders operating within an open and transparent governance model with a goal of delivering an open and globally consistent handset software platform based upon Mobile Linux for use by the whole mobile industry.
