LONDON --- Intel has acquired, for an undisclosed sum, mobile Linux development firm OpenedHand (London, England).
The chip giant will fold OpenedHand's product line, which focuses on porting Linux on to small devices, into its fast-expanding mobile Linux effort, notably for what Intel dubs "Mobile Internet Devices".
Specifically, it will shift its focus to creating a Linux stack for Intel's Atom processors utilizing Moblin's development kit.
OpenedHand is a long-time supporter of open source, and counts Nokia, Intel and One Laptop per Child among its customers, and is also a significant contributor to the Gnome desktop software project.
Members of its team have contributed to projects such as the Linux kernel, X Window System, Debian, OpenEmbedded, GTK+, GStreamer and Abiword.
"The OpenedHand team will join the Intel Open Source Technology Center and will focus on the development of the Moblin Software Platform, the optimized software stack for Intel Atom processors," the company said.
